If Riesling had a “most likely to succeed” award, Tesch “Karthauser” Riesling 2024would be polishing the trophy. It just pulled 97 points from James Suckling and landed at #8 in his “Top 100 Germany Wines of 2025” – not bad for a grape once accused of being “too serious”.
Karthauser is a steep, stony single vineyard in the Nahe where vines basically do boot camp: poor rocky soils, big sun, low yields, no nonsense. The payoff is a bone‑dry Riesling with electric citrus and stone fruit, laser acidity, and a long, salty‑mineral finish that makes chefs smile and wine nerds suspiciously emotional.
Running the show is Dr. Martin Tesch – scientist, rock‑music addict, and dry‑Riesling evangelist. He took his family’s 300‑year‑old estate and stripped it down “unplugged”: single sites, low yields, no sweetness safety net, no makeup in the cellar. The idea is simple: if the vineyard can’t shine on its own, it doesn’t make the cut. Karthauser absolutely does.
For optimal enjoyment, chill the wine to around 8-10°C before serving. It pairs well with seafood dishes, Asian cuisine, and light salads. Consider using it as an aperitif or alongside spicy fare to enhance the tasting experience.
